The Halal Guys, New York City

This post was first published on May 6, 2016 on one of my older blogs. Decided to repost it here at Her Little Guilty Pleasures due to reasons that I mentioned in this post.

I think I'm going to start updating about my trip to NYC soon but I'm not really sure how soon is soon. hehe! Have to go over thousands of pictures which half of them are most probably my selfies. We'll see.

Update in 2018: Apparently soon in not soon enough as I have yet to update anything about NYC even in 2018.

The Halal Guys, New York City

Anyway, when I was in NYC, I managed to go and eat The Halal Guys twice. I tried the Halal Guys for the first time after I was done with my visit to Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and then I ate it again before I went to EXO Planet #2 - The EXO'luXion in New York. Honestly, I was intrigued to try The Halal Guys because of the hype. I kept reading that The Halal Guys is so good, yadda yadda. Even my senior recommended The Halal Guys to me despite knowing that I'm quite fussy when it comes  to food.

I tried The Halal Guys cart at 53rd Street and Sixth Avenue after visiting MoMA. And guys, believe me, the food is to die for! Like seriously, the hype is not just a hype. It is a real deal! I tried their combo platter because I was rice-deprived at that time. It was so so delicious! The portion was big and the price was cheap! What a combo eh? It only cost me USD 7 for the combo platter. And just so you know, USD 7 for a meal in NYC is such a steal!

The Halal Guys, New York City

I was lucky because the line was short when I bought my combo platter. Right after I got mine, the line became so long. I was amused cause it was cold (hey there, winter!) but people did not mind to line up just to get the taste of The Halal Guys. Well, I was even fascinated of myself cause I sat across the cart and ate my combo platter there. *The cold never bothered me anyway*

Cold weather + Hot and spicy food (put too much hot sauce T_T) = Heaven

I was so smitten by the taste of The Halal Guys that I decided to eat it one more time. I kept saying to myself, "Have to eat The Halal Guys one more time before going back to Canada! Have to!" This time, I went to their restaurant at 720 Amsterdam Avenue because it's only a few blocks away from my hostel. Besides, I was short of time as I needed to go early to Prudential Center to pick up my lightstick.

Update in 2018: The Halal Guys just opened one restaurant in Toronto, Canada last year.

The Halal Guys, New York City

I think their restaurant was very clean, cute, and comfortable? Most probably because I came when they just opened for the day. lol! I ordered the same thing; the combo platter. However, the price was different. It cost me USD 7.99 instead of USD 7. I asked one of the employees about the price difference and according to him, the price is higher at the restaurant due to the taxes. Make sense.

The Halal Guys, New York City

As the environment and ambiance were different, so did the taste. ha! I found the combo platter sold at the cart was tastier than the ones sold at the restaurant. I don't know why, maybe because I was starving when I bought my combo platter at the cart but their tastes were different. Or maybe I was not fully awake when I went to The Halal Guys for the second time. hehe!

General tips to eat The Halal Guys: Put a lot of white sauce, like a loooooooooooooootttt, because the white sauce was so good! Put just a little of hot sauce because the sauce was hot like very HOT! You're going to burn your tongue if you put too much hot sauce. *This comes from a girl who loves spicy and hot food*

The Halal Guys, New York City
Trust me, it was delicious. This picture did not do justice to this goodness called The Halal Guys.

In any cases, I highly recommend you all to try The Halal Guys if you have a chance. Insya Allah, it will worth your money and satisfy your taste buds. Hopefully, they will open their restaurants in Malaysia soon! :)

Went to Lake Minnewanka yesterday to ride a cruise as it was Locals' Appreciation Day. I'm very happy to say that it was a quite good decision on my part. The ride was informative and entertaining and the view was to die for! I will definitely try my best to come back and explore the walking trails around the Lake Minnewanka in the next few weeks, insya Allah.

Went for another tour yesterday. Again, I'm not sure if I'm going to talk about it on my blog but let's just say that I was super happy that I decided to join the tour despite having to work later that night.

Alhamdulillah, I finally managed to hike the rockpile to get the best view of the Moraine Lake. It was amazingly stunning but this poor picture definitely did not do the justice for the greatness that is Moraine Lake. I'm so gonna try my best to come back to the Moraine Lake this summer so that I can catch it at its prettiest.

The Current "IT" App for Instagram Stories

Hello earthlings!

I have been receiving a lot of DMs and Whatsapp messages asking about the app that I use for my Instagram stories. I think I have replied to all of them but I'm just putting it here for others' references in the future. And you know, just in case I forgot to reply to anymore DMs and messages after this because we live in different time zones. Malaysians, I'm 14 hours behind than you all. So, please understand my siput or non-existent replies? :)

Anyway, in case you are not aware, I'm on Instagram; @happilyfarah Do follow me, urm, to see Canada from my lens (while I'm still in Canada?) and maybe some random pictures? #shamelesspromotion

Instagram Stories Made Through Unfold
A compilation of my Instagram Stories

Without further ado, let me tell you the name of the app. It's called Unfold. I believe the app is available on both iOS and Android though people have this misconception that this app is only available for iOS users. So, Android users, no need to feel sad okay because this app is not exclusive for iOS users. For your information, I'm currently using Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and the app is available on my Google Play Store and it sure works perfectly fine on my phone :)

So, what are you waiting for? Go download and install this Unfold app and start exploring the app! I hope you'll enjoy this Unfold app as much as I do :)

Horseback Riding at Jasper Park Stables

This post was first published on August 15, 2015 on one of my older blogs. Decided to repost it here at Her Little Guilty Pleasures due to reasons that I mentioned in this post.

Giddy up! Giddy up!

I went for horseback riding three Fridays ago! Wohoooooo! Alhamdulillah, it was such an amazing experience for me. I did not plan to go for horseback riding but Kelly, my colleague causally invited me to join her which I obviously said yes :)

Horseback Riding at Jasper Park Stables

It was my first time going for a horseback riding in Canada. And I totally loved every bits of the experience. I did not know what to expect and how to control a horse, but alhamdulillah everything went surprisingly well.

Horseback Riding at Jasper Park Stables

and more horses.

We went for the Cowboy Up ride which was an hour and 1/4 ride. It was the cheapest ride that we can get (yes, we are cheapskates!) and it was suitable for us who have little or no experience with horse.

It was actually very easy to control horses provided that they are well-trained. You just have to pull the rein to make them stop. Pull the rein to the right if you want to go left and vice versa. And, kick them (hard!) if you want to make them move.

Kah! Kah! Kah! Cakap macam banyak experience. Walhal masa mula-mula tu rasa nak menangis sebab tak pandai control kuda sendiri.

Horseback Riding at Jasper Park Stables
Pacer, my boy! :)

So, I got to ride Pacer. I honestly think he was either a rebel or he just did not like me. He did not really follow the horses in front of him and he kept walking to trees. I had to duck few times. Kalau tak, mahu bertelur ayam dahi sendiri. Well, I guess it was partially my fault. If only I knew how to control him better :(

And I had to keep kicking him because he was too slow. Kelly said I should kick him harder. I think I have already kicked him harder sebab rasa kaki macam dah nak patah sebab asyik kicked dia je. But still, he did not go any faster. At the same time, I can't avoid to think that I'm such a bad person because I had to kick him more than 20 times in that one and 1/4 hour.

And according to Kelly, he kept farting! Poor Kelly. I felt so bad for her as she was riding her horse behind me. He also pooped sesuka hati dia even though Rufus' (Kelly's horse) face was very near to his ass.

Kelly & I; Horseback Riding at Jasper Park Stables
Kelly & I

Pardon my language, but I have no idea how to word them properly. Tahukah anda yang kuda berak masa berjalan? I have no idea how they can berak masa berjalan. Tapi, kuda akan berhenti berjalan masa kencing. Interesting tak?

So, that's how my first horseback riding experience went. A little bit tiring but exciting and fun at the same times. I am planning to go for horseback riding in Banff or Lake Louise if I have a chance. Just so you know, the horses in Banff and Lake Lousie are way bigger than what we have here in Jasper.

Update in 2018: Insya Allah, I'm going for a horseback riding in Banff in the next 2 weeks. So, yeay for me? :)

Went for 11 hours tour yesterday. I'm not sure if I'm going to talk about it on this blog or not. but it was definitely one of the highlights of my week. Additionally, I was reminded to the times that I spent with my parents here, at the Athabasca Glacier, two years ago. It was their first time seeing and touching snow, and stepping on a glacier (mine as well). Their excitement and joyful laughs and smiles are still vivid and well-engraved in my memories. I guess Athabasca Glacier is more than just a glacier for me? :)

Hiking the Tunnel Mountain

I hiked the Tunnel Mountain with an inspiring lady of the same age as me (let's call her Z, from now on) on May 14, 2018. It was kinda a last minute plan after I met her. Initially, I wanted to hike the Tunnel Mountain alone on May 15, 2018, but alhamdulillah, Allah had a better plan for me. It was my first hike after living in Banff National Park for 9 months, so I was super excited about it!

Elk at Banff National Park
Hey, elk!

The Tunnel Mountain trail is considered as an easy hike as it's a switchback trail for most of the parts. The elevation gains is 300m while the average estimated return hike is around 2-3 hours depending on your fitness. We both took about 2 hours-ish to complete the trail. Honestly, it can be shorter than that, but I got cramps on my legs few times when we're on our way up to the summit. We had to stop few times, hence, the longer time. I felt guilty towards Z but thankfully, she was very understanding.

Reminder for myself: Please warm up and do stretching exercise before going for a hike!

View from the Tunnel Mountain

Z and I went hiking 30 minutes after I finished my shift. Both of us went hiking with feeling sorry to each other. I was sorry because she couldn't catch the sunrise as I finished my shift at 7 AM, while sunrise was around 5:50 AM, and she was sorry because we had to go hiking right after my shift. Again, thankfully, we both understood our situations that we both enjoyed each other company on top of the spectacular view.

View from Tunnel Mountain

Tunnel Mountain offers different kind of views along the trail. Ones can see the mountain ranges, the Bow River, the Vermilion Lakes, the Town of Banff, the Fairmont Banff Springs and its golf course, the Mount Rundle, the Spray River and others from various viewpoints. I personally liked the view of Mount Rundle, the Spray River, and the golf course. It was my first time seeing Mount Rundle that close. It was truly spectacular but too bad my picture did not do the justice due to the backlit of the morning sun.

Mount Rundle from the Tunnel Mountain
My personal favourite :)

We spent some times at various viewpoints enjoying the view, taking pictures, and talking about life. It was really interesting to see and learn about life from her point of view. Subhanallah, I learnt so much things from our casual conversation. Z does not know about this but she really inspires me so much in so many ways. Hopefully, I can be at least half of her. Or, I'll be grateful even if I can be at least 1/10 of her.

Farah & Zaza at the Tunnel Mountain
Z & I

The time that I spent hiking the Tunnel Mountain with Z was definitely a well-spent time. I got to soak the mesmerizing view with a great company that was Z. I also had time to reflect about my life and myself at the summit after talking with Z. For that, alhamdulillah, I'm eternally grateful.

My Songs of May 2018

Decided to post my songs of the month earlier than usual (I usually post them on the 27th of each month) as it's gonna be Ramadan soon and I want to avoid posting anything related to entertainment in Ramadan. As of May 13, my May was all about excitement. I was excited to go home, I was excited to observing Ramadan in Canada once again, and I was excited to go for number of tours.

I was definitely excited that I got to discover these songs. These songs have been sitting in my iTunes  for about 3 months to 1 year with ZERO play count until I put my playlist on shuffle. Thank you dear self for putting your playlist on shuffle! :)

Canoeing at Lac Beauvert

This post was written on September 25, 2015 but never get to be published on my older blog because I had other more interesting posts back then, I think?

Amanda and I decided to go for canoeing on our very last day in Jasper. I was glad that we decided to go canoeing despite the crappy weather. It was the best way to end our summer together :)

Amanda and I at Lac Beauvert

Canoeing together was possible thanks to Amanda as she won 1 hour boat rental from her department. Both of us were reluctant to go for canoeing at first as we don't know how to swim. Yes, there are safety jackets but we can't help to think about every bad situation that may happen. Macam mana kalau bot terbalik? Macam mana kalau macam tu? Macam mana kalau macam ni? Paranoid much, eh? Dia punya takut tu sampat tak bawa DSLR or phone. Saya cuma bawa waterproof camera je.

Lac Beauvert, Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada

The attendant at the boat house suggested canoeing to us because according to her, canoeing is easier than kayaking. Sangat sesuai dengan orang yang tiada pengalaman dan keyakinan macam kami ni.

Alhamdulillah, despite having minimal experience and zero confidence, we managed to row the boat. Tidaklah berpusing-pusing di tempat yang sama. In fact, we did better than we thought. We managed to go to different parts of Lac Beauvert. For your information, Lac Beauvert ni kira agak besar ya.

Lac Beauvert, Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada

And the most important thing, bot kami tak terbalik! Alhamdulillah. Bot terbalik yang paling kami takut sebenarnya. Tak nak terjatuh masuk Lac Beauvert sebab air Lac Beauvert sangat sejuk! Dan, kami tak terlanggar tebing pun. Thanks to Amanda yang sangat pandai kawal direction.

About the view, subhanallah, subhanallah, subhanallah. Tengok Lac Beauvert ni hari-hari pun masih tetap akan jatuh hati. We got to witness perubahan warna air Lac Beauvert. Warna air Lac Beauvert ni akan berubah-ubah according to weather. Of course it's gonna look the prettiest when it's sunny. Tapi, bila cuaca suam-suam kuku, berawan je pun masih cantik.

Lac Beauvert, Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada

I think Allah really wanted us to spend our last time together canoeing at Lac Beauvert. Sebabnya, elok je kami parked our boat, hujan pun turun mencurah-curah dari langit. Rasa bersyukur sangat-sangat sebab hujan turun lepas kami habis canoeing. Alhamdulillah. Kalau tak, mahu menangis gelabah dekat tengah tasik tu.

Lac Beauvert, Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada

Moga punya peluang lagi untuk menjejakkan kaki ke Lac Beauvert dan Jasper pada masa hadapan. Maybe not as an employee at the hotel but as a visitor or a tourist. Insya Allah. May Allah ease.

Update in 2018: I had a chance to visit Lac Beauvert and Jasper for about 3 days last year :)

Public Instagram Account VS Private Instagram Account

Okay, I'm going to sound so poyo or perasan but I just have to address this matter :(

Hello everyone!

This is just a PSA that I do not and will not approve strangers and fellow new bloggers on my private Instagram account. I'm so sorry about this but this is where my public Instagram account comes in. If you know me from Her Little Guilty Pleasures, you are more than welcome to follow my public Instagram account; @happilyfarah :)

Just to clarify few things. This is not me being sombong or pilih bulu or anything like that. Yes, I did approve some of the bloggers on my private Instagram account but that is because they have been with me, reading my blogs since 3-6 years ago. Or to be exact, I've been reading their blogs since 3-6 years ago that I'm comfortable enough to let them in my not-so-private space.

I can assure you that you will not miss anything by not following my private Instagram account. I personally think I update my public Instagram account more often than my private ones. I think few of the bloggers can vouch for that.

Anyway, I would appreciate your kind understanding of my decision. Thank you so much! :)

#FirstImpression: Suits (슈츠) (2018)

Snippet of the drama (From AsianWiki)
I think this is a bad synopsis of the drama but oh well, you know me. I'm lazy to write my own.

Choi Kang Seok (Jang Dong Gun) is a legendary lawyer at the top law firm in South Korea. He has charisma and an attractive appearance. He hires Go Yeon Woo (Park Hyung Sik) as a rookie lawyer for the law firm. Go Yeon Woo has excellent memory.

Suits (슈츠) (2018)
Credit: Here

My first impression
Firstly, I have to mention that I'm such a huuuuuuuge fan of the original Suits though I only watched the show until season 5. lol! The original Suits and I had this special connection as it helped me to get through my Business Law class when I was in my 4th year of university.

So, I was a lil bit skeptical when I read that Koreans will make a remake of Suits. I had dozens of questions running in my head. Will it be as good and entertaining as the original? Will they cast a perfect Harvey Specter and Mike Ross? How are they going to Koreanized the scenarios? Y'know, All sorts of stuff.

4 episodes in, I can say that Suits (슈츠) managed to steal my heart and I definitely will keep watching the rest of the show, unless something major happened. I'm no professional in any way but I think the cinematography looked luxurious and it gave a film vibes instead of a drama vibes. The show also exuded modern feeling. You'll understand what I meant by this if you watch the show.

As for the cast, I'm not feeling the female characters yet. The Rachel's, Jessica's, and Donna's equivalents were a lil bit lacking? Hope they all will have characters development soon. As for the male characters, I think Jang Dong Gun (장동건) is the perfect Harvey Specter and Park Hyung Sik (박형식) is an okay Mike Ross? I can see Harvey and qualities that define Harvey in Jang Dong Gun. They were crazy synced and in tune. It was a different case for Park Hyung Sik. I can't see Mike Ross at all in Park Hyung Sik but I kinda liked his interpretation of Mike Ross. And, Park Hyung Sik definitely looked more suave and good looking than Mike Ross. Hahahaha :D

In any cases, I will try to remain partial and see Suits as a standalone show instead of comparing it to the original from now on. I can't wait to see which cases will be highlighted in this show and how the characters will overcome all the challenges. I'm also anticipating high quality humours and jokes for the rest of the show. Hopefully it will be a fun ride! :)

That One Time I Met a Geek in Real Life

This post was originally written on August 19, 2015. However, I met this guy circa 2013? I guess this what happened when you browsed through all your pictures? They brought back all the memories, no? :)

If you know me in real life, you probably know that I have always loved geeks and nerds in general. I find them very interesting. While this might sound childish, I used to dream to have a nerdy or geeky boyfriend before.

However, I think I no longer feel the same way!

It all changed after I met a geek at an event. I am forever thankful for this chance of meeting this guy. He made me realize that I will never fully understand geeks, so to speak. He also made me realize that I will never be a good friend to geeks, according to my friendship standards. No, he did not do anything wrong. And I like to believe that I did not do anything wrong too. We just had a hard time understanding each other. This was one of the many times that I was reminded the importance effective communication.

Farah circa 2013
Oh my double chin! :p

Based on almost 3 hours that we spent together, I found out that we did not speak the same language, and we lived in a different world, figuratively, and we had totally different ways of thinking. However, if I am to put aside all the differences, I think we can be a decent pair of friends. This was something that we both agreed on at the end of the event.

Though I no longer love nerds and geeks (in a romantic sense, I guess), they will always have my full respect because I still find them interesting. After all, who am I to hate another human being? You guys rock, nerds and geeks! Keep being you! :)

In case you're wondering, I had a really good time with the gent above. I mean, my situation can be more worse, you know. I might be sitting alone and eating alone for 3 hours if he was not there. Our conversation turned to science lesson because he was so enthusiastic about the stuff that I cannot remember. Well, I'm not a big fan of science, so, forgive me for not remembering what he talked about. Oh, we also covered geography and history lessons specifically about Iceland. Admittedly, I was attracted to his curiosity and thirst of new knowledge but can you imagine someone talking non-stop about science, geography, and history lessons over dinner? Yeah, me neither :p

Okay, I sounded so mean and sarcastic on the paragraph above but the guy was aware of my feelings and thoughts. I was honest to a fault when we were talking that I told him that I did not understand most of the science stuff that he mentioned. I also let him know that I was sorry that I couldn't reciprocate our conversation well as I knew nothing about Iceland and things that he talked about.

Hello! This is 2018's Farah talking.

After re-reading this post, I realized two things. Firstly; I think I love people who can click with me instantly and share the same interests as me more than anything. Looking back, dude was a good looking guy and intelligent; two traits that I very much appreciate in someone of the opposite sex, on top of being a geek - a trait that I once loved. Honestly, he ticked almost all the boxes of "My Kind Of Guy I'd Like To Date Or Marry One Day" (begitu sekali confession nya eh?) but we just did not click. Hence, the 3 hours friendship.

Err, okay to be honest, it was my fault that our friendship lasted for 3 hours only. He did give me his number so that we can go for a coffee sesh but I didn't say yes when he asked me out for a coffee sesh. I only texted him right after the event to say thanks for the umpteenth time for the 3 hours we spent together. That's it.

Secondly, all people around me must feel the same way like I did back then, whenever I start talking about anything Korean, tourism industry, and travel aspirations. They must be bored to death and couldn't care less. I'm deeply sorry, guys. Will talk less about things that excite me whenever we meet especially if you're not interested in any of them :)
